SO, what is DBT?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a cognitive behavioral treatment which offers individuals comprehensive skills to manage painful or intense emotions, reduce suffering, decrease conflicts in their relationships and build a life worth living.

  • Choosing DBT Network of Utah means receiving top-quality mental health care that’s made just for you. We offer expert help with psychiatric medication to make sure you get the right treatment for your needs. Our Nurse Practitioners are able to provide both therapy and medication management so that you can see one provider for both services. It takes a lot to be specialized and trained in DBT strategies. The Linehan Board of Certification is a non-profit organization that has developed certification standards for DBT clinicians. There are only eight certified clinicians in the state of Utah. DBT Network of Utah has three Linehan Board Certified Clinicians that work with our clients and others who are working toward certification.

    • Mindfulness – Helps individuals be present in the current moment.

    • Distress tolerance – Most people try and keep themselves safe from all negative emotions. Distress tolerance is geared toward increasing a person’s tolerance to negative emotion.

    • Emotion regulation – Offers strategies to manage intense emotions that are the root cause of problems in a person’s life.

    • Interpersonal effectiveness – These techniques allow an individual to communicate with others in a confident, assertive way that maintains self-respect and strengthens relationships.

  • Comprehensive DBT has the most research behind it.  It includes 4 Components:

    1. Weekly Individual Therapy with a DBT Trained Therapist

    2. Weekly DBT Skills Class that lasts at least 6 months

    3. Telephone Skills Coaching with your DBT Therapist to help you generalize the skills you are learning

    4. Weekly Consultation Team Meeting for all providers to make sure they adhere to DBT best practices

If the DBT program you are in or are investigating doesn't include those 4 Components, you are not getting DBT.

DBT Informed therapy offers a portion of DBT without all 4 Components.  It may include individual therapy alone where you learn DBT skills.  It might include attending a skills class but not meeting with a DBT individual therapist.  DBT informed therapy can be helpful for some individuals.  But if you frequently have suicidal ideation, self harm thoughts and/or behaviors, impulsive behaviors, and/or have not found other therapies helpful, you may benefit most from doing a Comprehensive DBT Program.
